Canada’s minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship Marc Miller on Friday said the North American nation is imposing a cap on study permit applications to curb the rapid increase of international students in Canada. Now the cap will be based on the number of study permits expiring this year, he said. International students who have completed their master’s degree programme, even in less than two years, are now eligible to apply for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP), according to the recent update in the Canadian government’s rules for international students.   According to the updated guidelines, students who have enrolled in Course Licensing Agreement programs will no longer be eligible for PGWP. For the first time since the test was introduced in 1936, more Indians took the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) than American students in 2022-23, according to a report released on Friday. China followed the two countries on the list. Canada’s decision to cap the number of international students this year and introduce stricter work visa rules will force students from India to opt for other countries. Counselling centres said even a year ago, half of their customers wanted admissions and immigration to Canada, but are now asking for other countries. “The latest announcement is definitely going to have an impact,” said Ajay Sharma, founder and president, Abhinav Immigration Services Pvt. As many as 403 Indian students studying abroad have died since 2018 and the reasons include natural causes, accidents and medical conditions, government data revealed.  Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs V Muraleedharan told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, “403 incidents of death of Indian students abroad have been reported since 2018.” Various reasons for the death include “natural causes, accidents and medical conditions”.
