Chennai school holiday due to heavy rain alert: Check important details here - Times of India

Chennai School Holiday Due to Heavy Rain: Heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal continues to impact Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, leading to the closure of schools and colleges in several districts. On Wednesday, schools in nine Tamil Nadu districts, including Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Ramanathapuram, were shut. While authorities have confirmed closures in some regions for today, there has been no announcement regarding holidays for schools in Chennai as of now.
Schools Closed in Multiple Districts in Tamil Nadu
Education Minister Arumugam Namassivayam confirmed that all government, aided, and private schools in Puducherry and Karaikal will remain closed today, November 28. Similarly, schools in Tamil Nadu districts such as Villupuram, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, and Trichy are also observing a holiday.
Meanwhile, Chennai schools remain open today despite the forecast of heavy rainfall over the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for several coastal areas, warning of potential flooding and advising fishermen to stay off the sea.
Cyclone Fengal is expected to cross the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of November 30. The IMD predicts the system could intensify into a cyclonic storm with wind speeds reaching 65-75 kmph, gusting up to 85 kmph, as it moves northward over the Bay of Bengal.
To address the potential impact of the cyclone, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin convened a meeting on Tuesday at the Chennai Secretariat. He directed the deployment of 17 teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to high-risk areas such as Chennai, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam. The teams are on standby to handle emergencies and mitigate any cyclone-related damages.
