Several aspirants of the medical entrance exam NEET have alleged inflation of marks which led to a record 67 candidates bagging the top rank of which six of them were from the same exam centre. NTA announced The results announced by NTA on Wednesday evening saw 67 students sharing rank one, including six from same examination centre in Haryana.

Students across the country are complaining and social media is filled with reactions on inflation of marks allegations. Some students are demanding the cancellation of the results and a re-examination. One user on Reddit said, “Mathematically impossible scores in NEET 2024”

Another student on Reddit called for protest in Mumbai and also asked other students to join in.

On X, one student said, “it’s a humble request for #Reneet. Otherwise, we will protest at your office and close your door permanently. This is a big scam. Please conduct #Reneet with fairness.”

Another student also raised concern about the re-exam and said that he is mentally exhausted from the initial exam and also raised doubts about the effectiveness of attempting it again. “Mentally completely drained the first time itself. It’s a lose-lose situation.” Another student said, “Rank toh marks ki vajah se gandi hai but reneet ko survive karna mentally toh bohot mushkil hai. 2-3 mahine fir vohi nlm and salt analysis mujhse nahi ho paayega”

An aspirant took to X and said, “67 students scoring 720 out of 720 marks in the results released after the NEET exam paper leak raises suspicion. This is playing with the future of lakhs of candidates of the country, due to which there is anger among the students. The government should conduct a high-level investigation”.

Another X user Nitish Rajput said NTA awarded grace marks according to the court order but the students argue this sudden decision is unjust as the agency has not mentioned any methodology to award these ‘grace marks’.

“Calls for transparency in the process have only grown louder. The controversy for the NTA is brewing as lakhs of students demand re-examination citing lack of clarity in NTA’s explanations and have even pushed for the Supreme Court’s intervention. Grace marks given for lost exam time have raised concerns of fairness,” he added.

Apart from students, Physics Wallah’s Alakh Pandey has also questioned the NEET UG 2024 results.

As per PTI report, an 18-year-old NEET aspirant died allegedly by jumping from the ninth floor of a building in Kota. The incident occurred a day after the NTA declared the NEET-UG results, in which the victim, Bagisha Tiwari, scored 320 out of 720 marks. 

NTA clarification on ‘grace marks’, cut-offs and ‘inflation’ of marks

The NTA said, “The cutoff scores are determined based on the overall performance of candidates each year.” It added, “The increase in cut-off reflects the competitive nature of the examination and the higher performance standards achieved by the candidates this year. Cut-offs and average marks of qualified candidates (out of 720) vary each year.”

In a statement issued, the NTA denied the allegations and said the changes made in NCERT textbooks and grace marks for losing time at the examination centres are some of the reasons behind the students scoring higher marks.

Meanwhile, the exam for NEET UG 2024 was conducted on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 abroad, for more than 24 lakh candidates.
