Modest placements at engineering, business schools spark repayment concerns

MUMBAI : It has been a tepid student placements season so far at India’s engineering colleges, and a similar lull is expected in business schools, particularly in the small cities. But for some, there’s a bigger worry: without a job straight out of college, or jobs at lower salaries than expected, students who’ve borrowed lakhs of rupees to fund their expensive education might struggle to repay. These students declined to be identified. The premier engineering colleges are concerned about a repeat of potential delays in joining dates for the selected students, as had happened to previous graduating batch given slowdowns in certain ... IIT-Bombay saw 40 companies interviewing on the first day of placements, with about 80% of regular recruiters participating. While more than 250 pre-placement offers were accepted, the engineering college expects over 350 companies to participate in this year’s placement season.  Among the recruiters at IIT-Bombay on Day 1 were Google India, Apple, Microsoft India, Procter and Gamble, Sony Japan, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, ...
