US-India Foundation announces opening of annual Fulbright-Nehru fellowship

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has announced the opening of its annual competition for Fulbright-Nehru and other Fulbright fellowships for Indian citizens, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday. The fellowships are funded by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and the US Department of State. According to the MEA release, such exchanges have helped bring the people of India and the United States closer through opportunities that enrich fellows’ academic, research, teaching, and professional capacities. Despite visa hurdles, Indian students in US surged a record 35% in 2022-23

Despite visa hassles, the United States still remains the top choice for higher education for Indians, Open Doors Report cited. In the academic year 2022-23, the number of Indian students in the US surged by 35%, reaching a record 268,923.  During June-August 2023, which is typically the student visa season, the US Embassy and Consulates in India granted a record-high number of student visas. In India, consular staff granted 95,269 visas in the F, M, and J categories. This marks an 18% surge increase over the same timeframe. More colleges offering admission to students who never applied

Direct admissions, as the approach is often called, allow colleges to send offers to students based just on their GPAs or a few other criteria, such as intended major or geographic location, without the hassle of essays, recommendation letters and months of uncertainty. More than 85% of four-year schools admit at least half their applicants, federal data show. They just make those candidates jump through hoops first.
