The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced an extension of school holidays following the quarterly examinations for all types of schools across the state. According to the latest update, students will now return to school on October 7, 2024. Initially, the holidays were set to conclude on October 2, 2024, with classes resuming on October 3.However, with the extended break, students will have a few extra days off before the new term begins.
The official X (formally Twitter) handle of the Tamil Nadu School Education Department announced the news. It tweeted, “ Extension of quarterly leave for schools in Tamil Nadu has been extended till October 6. School Education Department has announced that schools will reopen on October 7 after the holidays.
Reason behind the extension of holidays
According to reports, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has decided to extend the school vacation following a request from the teachers’ union. The quarterly examinations for all classes were conducted between September 20 and September 27, 2024. Teachers reportedly sought an extension of the holiday period to allow them additional time to evaluate and grade students’ exam papers thoroughly. In response to this request, the department issued an official order extending the holidays for all government, government-aided, private primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools.
The directive specified that schools will remain closed until October 6, 2024, instead of the earlier planned reopening on October 3. This extension applies to all types of schools across the state, ensuring that both students and staff benefit from a slightly longer break. Classes are now scheduled to resume on October 7, 2024. This move is expected to give teachers ample time to complete the evaluation process while providing students additional time of rest before returning to their academic routines.
Teachers are required to evaluate students’ answer sheets and upload the results to the Education Management Information System (EMIS) during the break. With the extension of the holidays, teachers will now have sufficient time to complete the evaluation process. Additionally, during this period, teachers can work on improving their teaching skills through the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), under the school education department. SCERT has developed a mobile app featuring training modules designed to enhance teaching skills.
