Ranked among the top 100 universities globally by the QS World Rankings 2025, the University of Southampton’s presence in India will enrich the educational landscape, offering students a unique opportunity for global exposure while receiving an education rooted in Indian values.
This marks the first time a foreign university has been issued an LoI under the UGC regulations for setting up Indian campuses of foreign universities.
According to media reports, the University of Southampton has been active in India for nearly 50 years, developing deep and mutually beneficial partnerships.
As per a tweet by the Press Trust of India, the university will establish its campus in Gurugram and begin offering courses in 2025.
University of Southampton in QS World Rankings 2025
In the QS World Rankings 2025, the University of Southampton secured the 80th position with an overall score of 64.1. It received a score of 50.1 for academic reputation and 40.7 for the faculty-to-student ratio.

The University of Southampton offers more than 300 degree programs across various levels, including undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate studies. These programs span a range of leading fields such as Engineering, Medicine, Finance, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Film Studies, Music, Psychology, and more.
In the QS World Rankings 2024, the university had six subjects in the global top 50: Nursing was ranked 6th, Archaeology 33rd, Earth and Marine Sciences 39th, Statistics and Operational Research 39th, Geology 42nd, and Geophysics 43rd. Additionally, twelve subjects were in the global top 100: Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering at 51st, Physics and Astronomy at 59th, Medicine at 62nd, Electrical and Electronics Engineering at 72nd, Civil and Structural Engineering in the 51-100 band, and Philosophy in the 51-100 band.
University of Southampton: Scholarships for Indian Students
The university offers several scholarships to students from various countries. For Indian students, there are two main scholarships available: the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Loan Scholarship and the University of Southampton – GREAT Scholarships 2023.
Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Loan Scholarship: The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation is a non-profit organisation established by an endowment from Mr. Narotam Sekhsaria. The eligibility criteria include the following:
- Applicants must be Indian nationals residing in India.
- Applicants must be under 30 years of age as of January 31, 2024.
- Applicants must have graduated from an accredited Indian university.
- Students in their final year of their degree course or those awaiting results are also eligible.
- Applicants planning to pursue postgraduate studies at top-ranking institutions starting Fall 2024 are eligible.
- Applicants who have applied and are awaiting acceptance from the university are also eligible.
- The award of the scholarship is subject to securing admission.
University of Southampton – GREAT Scholarships 2023: This scholarship is in partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign. The scholarship amount is £10,000 off your tuition fees. It is available to Indian students applying for the following subjects:
- MSc Economics
- MSc Actuarial Sciences
- MSc Optical Engineering
- Any one-year taught master’s programme within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
To apply for the scholarship, you must:
- Have an offer to study an eligible course.
- Be an Indian citizen with an Indian passport.
- Have met the University’s English language requirements by the deadline.
- Be willing to act as an ambassador for UK higher education, promoting the value of studying at a UK university and advocating for the scholarship.
- Be prepared to demonstrate future contributions to capacity building and socio-economic advancement through the benefits achieved after graduation.
