Besides, there is an acute shortfall in some states and most rural and remote areas. For instance, Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, has fewer than one doctor for every 2,000 residents. Countries such as China and Brazil, with 3.1 and 2.4 physicians per 1,000 people, respectively, are well ahead of India (0.7), as per data from the World Health Organization.
