NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Higher Education Minister Atishi has instructed the secretary (higher education) to launch an investigation into the purported irregularities within the 12 colleges of Delhi University funded by the government, as per officials. Atishi highlighted “significant procedural irregularities,” revealing that the colleges had made appointments for 1,897 positions (939 teaching and 958 non-teaching) without obtaining the necessary approval from the Delhi government. “Major procedural irregularities have surfaced. The Delhi University has directed its colleges to install CCTV cameras outside women’s toilets and changing rooms during fests. The advisory has come following an incident in which some women were secretly filmed while changing in IIT-Delhi. Besides, the varsity has asked its colleges and departments to install CCTV cameras at all gates of the institutes and hostels to avoid any mishaps. Ahead of the beginning of the new academic year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning to the universities against offering Master of Philosophy (MPhil) courses. The UGC said that it doesn’t recognise the degree and also advised the students to not take admissions in these programmes. Many universities have been found to invite applications for MPhil for the next academic session. NEW DELHI: Students at Delhi University can now study two academic programmes concurrently. The academic council approved the proposal during its meeting on November 30, 2023. Meanwhile, the academic council postponed a decision on twinning degrees and taking two courses at two different institutions. The academic council along with the executive council forms the decision-making bodies of the varsity.During a meeting on Thursday, the council members gave the go-ahead to dual degrees. Delhi University has reportedly hiked PhD courses’ fees, resulting in a massive backlash from students and teachers.
