The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked states to establish district-level panels aimed at curbing the menace of ragging in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in compliance with the directives issued by the Supreme Court in a judgment in 2009. The higher education regulator in the country has notified the “Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009”, underlining the criminality of ragging and mandating its prevention, prohibition, and elimination within HEIs. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notice to all higher education institutions asking them to refrain from admitting foreign nationals into open and distance learning (ODL) programmes. The notice highlighted the eligibility criteria specified in UGC regulations Annexure III that only students residing in India are eligible for enrolment in ODL programs. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced the university will accept the scores of the National Eligibility Test (NET) instead of the National Testing Agency (NTA) entrance test as the selection criteria for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs from the current academic session, i.e. Academic Year 2024-25. University Grant Commission Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar on Monday announced that the normalisation of scores for the Common University Entrance Test-UG (CUET-UG) and the National Eligibility Test (NET) is being done away with from this year, news agency PTI reported. Students with 4-year undergraduate degrees can now directly appear for National Eligibility Test (NET), University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar informed on Sunday.  He also added that the students with 4-year undergraduate degrees can directly pursue PhD if they have 75 per cent aggregate marks or an equivalent grade. NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided that starting from the academic session 2024-25, PhD admissions can utilize National Eligibility Test (NET) scores. This decision aims to streamline the admission process under the National Education Policy, eliminating the need for multiple entrance exams. The UGC made this determination during its 578th meeting on March 13, based on recommendations from an expert committee tasked with reviewing UGC NET exam provisions.Presently, the NET exam primarily serves for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) eligibility and assistant professor appointments.
